Ingredients

  • 1 kg ground beef (preferably a mix of beef and pork)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 pcs eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Butter or oil, for frying

Equipment

  • 1 Large Mixing Bowl
  • 1 Frying Pan or Skillet
  • 1 Cooking spoon or spatula
  • 1 Cutting Board and Knife:

Method

  1. Prepare the Meat Mixture:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let them sit for a few minutes until the breadcrumbs absorb the milk.
Add the ground beef, finely chopped onion, eggs, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg to the bowl.
Mix everything together thoroughly using your hands or a spoon until well combined. The mixture should be moist but firm enough to shape into balls.
  2. Shape the Köttbullar:
Take a small amount of the meat mixture and roll it between your palms to form a smooth ball, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Place the shaped Köttbullar on a plate or baking sheet.
  3. Cook the Köttbullar:
Heat a large frying pan or skillet over medium heat and add a knob of butter or a drizzle of oil.
Once the butter is melted or the oil is hot, add the Köttbullar in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook them for about 4-5 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are browned on all sides and cooked through.
You may need to adjust the heat to ensure they cook evenly without burning.
  4. Serve and Enjoy:
Once cooked, transfer the Köttbullar to a serving platter lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
Serve hot with lingonberry sauce, creamy mashed potatoes, and pickled cucumbers on the side for a traditional Swedish meal.
  5. Optional Garnishes:
Garnish the Köttbullar with chopped parsley or dill for a fresh herbal note, if desired.
Enjoy your homemade Köttbullar with family and friends, and savor the flavors of Sweden!
